What's your favourite TV show?

1. The Wire

2. Gilmore Girls

3. Veronica Mars

If you've been following my blog for awhile you might know the husband and I are big fans of TV on DVD. We're never home at the right times to follow series when they're on TV and it's too hard having to wait week to week for new episodes. DVD is the way to go- we can crank out a whole season of a program in one week if we're really enjoying it.

Anyway after watching the three series above this year (Gilmore Girls for the 3rd time I might add!) we've suddenly found ourselves in limbo with nothing to watch.... So the big question is- what do we watch next? Soprano's? Mad Men? The Shield?

Suggestions please :) :)

And if you haven't watched any of the series above you have to do so now now now! V Mars is a bit sad because it got cancelled so you get left a bit hanging but the glory of the 3 seasons it did air for make it all worth it. Gilmore Girls is classic and The Wire- boy oh boy did that change the standard of what constitutes "good tv" for me- absolutely brilliant on every level.

Anyway let me know what you think!

  1. You should definitely check out the show "Dexter". Beware: It's slightly addictive.

  2. I didn't think I would but I absolutely love Vampire Diaries so definitely check that out if you haven't already.

& If you feel like seeing some pretty English countryside shots see Lark Rise to Candleford (:

  3. Ok, so I'm not going to put these is any particular order because it's too hard.

Futurama: I just think that this show is funny on a subtle cultural level. Start with: ep 1! But def hold out until ep 3.

Seinfeld: Best show about nothing. So many inside jokes and, again, cultural jokes eg. why is hair in the drain different from hair on your head. You have to watch at least 3-5 eps to get in the swing.

The Office (american): One of those shows that seems boring, but is good/excellent once you watch a few eps and get into the swing.

Black books: So funny and off-beat. A real cult classic.

Also good: Summer Heights High, Southpark, NCIS, Daria.

You might have some different tastes though, I'm not really into drama except maybe House. I just now see a recurring theme, they all have a subtle line of cultural humour in them.
Anyways, those are my favs :)

  4. Have you seen "Six Feet Under"? It's a series about a family owning a funeral home and their customers. Wonderful, very dark humour. Oh my.

And Dexter is just as good, just darker, way darker.

  5. I am a huge fan of Gilmore Girls too, it is however a shame that all DVDs aren't available in France.
As for other series advice, I think FRIENDS is something you can never grow tired of. I also got surprisingly hooked on 24.
And I finally admit a guilty pleasure : Gossip Girl.

  6. i'm such a huge tv addict it's sickening haha
shows i'm into at the moment are 30 Rock, Fringe, True Blood and this amazing british one called Mistresses :)

  7. Well, I agree with you on GG being a classic.Love that show. Now, I've kind of been through most of the popular tv shows...Gossip Girl, Mad Men, Vampire Diaries, House M.D.- which is my favourite.Sure, there would be the good old ones as Seinfield and Friends.Epic...

  8. Well, I don't have that much time to watch TV, but like you I love to buy series on DVD. Some of my favorites are:

    1) Sex and the City
    2) Big Bang Theory
    3) Desperate Housewives
    4) Friends

  9. You HAVE to see Mad Men, it looks gorgeous and don't let the slow moving narratives put you off, the character development is superb and it is truly addictive!
Also if you haven't seen House that's a good one to get in to...

  10. "How to make it in a america." available to buy on itune store.

  11. oooh so much love for the gilmore girls! i thought i would hate desperate housewives but i actually really enjoyed it(so did the boyfriend haha!)

  12. GILMORE GIRLS IS THE BEST. Still, I don't have the expense to pay 260 something for the entire seasons on DVD. I never really got to watch the last few episodes, but I found out anyway :/

    aweesome posting these days :)

  13. I do not watch all that much television, but I love the show Chuck!

  14. I do not watch all that much television, but I love the show Chuck!

  15. I LOVE TV shows on DVD!! I'm a huge fan myself!! :)
I just bought the first three seasons of Mad Men and am enjoying it so far!! :)
As for older shows, my recommendations: Pushing Daisies, Prison Break (first season at least!), Weeds (first two seasons), Entourage!

  16. oh gosh, mad men, mad men, mad men. also for light-comedy-drama-cuteness, new aussie tv offspring is good, it's definitely not out on dvd yet but you can watch it through the channel ten website after it airs.
love ailsa formerly of messymaisies which has gone bust (sorry)

  17. I love Gilmore Girls! I thinks it has to be one of the best shows ever! I also love House, Bones, and Gossip Girl. :D

  18. My all time favorite are my Sex and the City DVDs.
    On television? NCIS
    Great question!

  19. i few of my favourite shows include:
Doctor Who, True Blood,Dexter, How I Met Your Mother, Bones, The Big Bang Theory, Pushing Daisies, The Vampire Diaries.

But my all time favs are british sitcoms like Black Adder, Red Dwarf, Fawlty Towers, Black Books, 'Allo 'Allo!, Absolutely Fabulous, Are You Being Served?, The Young Ones and Bottom

The Young Ones and Bottom are the best xD

i think you would really like pushing daisies if u havent seen it, really quirky fantasy tale.

i heard mad men was really good. been meaning to borrow it off my friend.

it also depends what u look for in a tv show and what u like. comedy, crime, horror, fantasy....

  20. Gilmore girls are always on my list- they are my absolutely favourite TV show ever! :)

  21. Some of My Favorites:

    The Big Bang Theory
    The IT Crowd
    How I Met Your Mother

Don't laugh but I just watched Roswell which is all about high schoolers and aliens and it's so terrible but addicting!

  22. You HAVE to watch Mad Men, it's just perfect.
And this is coming from someone who adores the three on your list so I think we're on the same track.

  23. mad men or lost are both pretty good on dvd.

  24. This comment has been removed by the author.

  25. I loved the Gimore girls too!
    These are my favorites:

    -FRIENDS (classic)

-HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (soooo much fun!)

-DOCTOR'S DIARY (it's very very funny, women love it! it's a german tv show but it looks very "american")

-MALCOLM IUN THE MIDDLE (it's Hilarioussssssss, really surrealistic sometimes! a great great show!)

-MY NAME IS EARL (very funny also!!)

  26. Bryan Fuller is absolutely brilliant. I love Pushing Daisies and Wonderfalls. They were both canceled prematurely (just like Veronica Mars) but the shows are still a lot of fun, and they did have time to wrap the seasons up a bit so they aren't left on big cliff hangers.
Psych is also a very funny show. I think there are 3 or 4 seasons on DVD already.

  27. How random that I just ran into the same problem and wrote a post about it as well! (

I would recommend the OC and Grey's Anatomy. :)

  28. Big Love is awesome!
But the series isn't done yet so there will be some waiting around when you get to the end of the 3rd season. The fourth is coming out on DVD around Christmas and then the 5th season begins on HBO in the new year.
But it really is worth it. It is great.

  29. I don't watch very much TV, but I do watch TV on DVD. See if you can get Being Erica. It's a great show about a woman who has a chance to go back and fix her regrets.

  30. I don't watch much TV at all, but these seem like great picks!

  31. I so agree with your picks.

    - Friday Night Lights
    - Damages
    - Southland
    - Sons of Anarchy
    - Arrested Development
    - Black Books
    - Six Feet Under
    - True Blood
    - Coupling (british)
    - Lost
    - Breaking Bad

All right, I watch a lot of tv on dvd, but whatever :)

    - Ruby

  32. Well, there are a few nice ones, Dexter, Mad Men and Bones on the drama side.

If you're looking for comedy, definitely check out Arrested Development. They also like Veronica Mars, see?

  33. I would definitely try Mad Men, also LOST, True Blood, The Community, Modern Family, The Office, Lie To Me, Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, 90210 the new one.

  34. here are some shows that are good : Dexter, Glee, How I Met Your Mother, House, Lost, The Office, and Modern Family

  35. Lost is sometimes seen as this crazy scifi robinson crusoe (well, it kinda is) but what I absolutely love about it is how it has the character flashbacks. It shows how and why characters act the way they do and really interesting. Also it's a tad bit addicting. But if you can't handle unanswered questions, you won't like Lost.

  36. me and my boyfriend got so addicted to the wire we ended up staying up til stupid o'clock every night until we'd watched all 5 seasons. it's so so good though!
my fav tv series at the moment is called the great bristish bake off. it's so good. full pf yummy cakes and macaroons! x

oh my god, i love this show so much, words can't even describe. if you're at all into politics--scratch that, if you're into intelligent, quick-witted, touching shows, you'll love it. :)

  38. ONE TREE HILL is the only way to go . that and Greys Anatomy

  39. haha, you're going to have a lot of tv watching ahead after all these suggestions :)
    my favorites are all english:
    black books & gren wing.
and if you're after a miniseries bleak house is a must!

  40. Some of my past favs have been Boston Legal, Modern Family, Summer Heights High (Chris Lilley is a genius) and the short but quirky first season of Misfits. I'm all about streaming TV series too but can't find anything I like right now either, just gave The Wire a go but the first episode did nothing for me sorry!

  41. Dexter is EXTREMELY addictive.

I don't get sucked into TV shows THAT often, but shows that did manage to reel me in include: LOST, Battlestar Galactica, True Blood, Weeds, Futurama, Burn Notice and Fringe.

I really need to give Mad Men a shot!

  42. Lost, How I met your mother, Scrubs!

  43. at the moment I am loving 30 Rock, Community, Roswell, Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, Daria, Bones, Doctor Who, and Buffy. :)

  44. I love gilmore girls, havent seen it in ages so i may have to get that.

I love "pushing daisies" - so quirky and cool
I just powered throught "that 70's show" - it cracks me up.
I really enjoyed the first 2 seasons of "tru blood" but the third doesnt seem to be doing for me
and Im currently watching "dark angel" again - scifi with the awesome miss alba

    i hope they help

  45. Oooh, I second "Freaks and Geeks." So good. Also love LOST, Arrested Development, Friday Night Lights, and am currently working on an old classic, "Twin Peaks." Season One was amazing, Season Two meh.

  46. Mad Men Mad Men Mad Men! I just know you will love it what with all the costuming and 60's charm :)

  47. @Louise you have to give the Wire more than one episodes chance to win you over! The beauty of it is how attached you become to the characters and how important their story lines become to you! it definitely needs a good 4-5 episodes worth of trying out before you decide on it!!

annnnd sounds like Mad Men is the one i must try next!

  48. Definitely Mad Men. Probably the most addictive TV i have ever watched!

  49. in response to your question on my blog.
Omar is my fav, without a doubt.
I love a good but bad character!

  50. I just finished watching the first season of Veronica Mars and ADORED it. So great. I'm writing a review for it with loads of movies for my blog after I read up on all my bloglists.

  51. True Blood! Definately the best programme on tv, and there's 3 series of it waiting for you to watch

My other favourites are british comedies - the IT crows, the inbetweeners, alan partrdige, league of gentlemen and peep show

  52. You're the second person today that I see mentioning Gilmore Girls! I super miss the Gilmores! :)

  53. Gosh I miss the Gilmore Girls!!
I'd recommend Gossip Girl, I'm watching it for the third time so its a good one to repeat, or the OC. Or the IT crowd and the Inbetweeners are pretty legendary!

  54. Six Feet Under! After the Wire, I was the same way-- needed a show that could stay on that level. Six Feet Under is expertly written-- just wait till the last 5 minutes!

  55. Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars!!!!! You know I'm crazy about those 2! I still love re-watching them on DVD over and over. If there's any other TV shows I adore, it's probably Friends and Pushing Daisies.. and I'm currently loving Glee too.

P.S. I love you for posting that Veronica and Logan pic! *swoon* They need to make a Veronica Mars movie ASAP, don't you think?

  56. i like true blood, desperate housewives, the good wife, modern family and the big bang theory! i've seen a few of dexter and mad men too and would love to see more of these two.

  57. Put everything you're doing right now and start watching season 1 of Mad Men. It's an amazing show, but I have to warn you. It took me about 7 episodes before I was drawn in by the characters that my mouth actually dropped. Come stop by for a slice of retro LA sweetie!

  58. I vote, Dexter, Mad Men or The Office :) I'm completely with you on watching TV on DVD... only way to do it!!

  59. If you are looking for darker tv, The Shield and Damages are some of the best shows out there.

And even though it ended and a lot of folks weren't satisfied, I'd still say Lost was one of the best shows ever.

  60. Madmen. It will change your life. I agree with Keely, Dexter too. And for laughs 30 Rock or Modern Family.
