This is an actual conversation I had last week when buying a dress and the shop assistant noticed I was holding a book:
Girl: oh my gosh is that a book???!!
Me: um yes it is
Girl: Oh my gosh that's so cute you're reading a book! wow!
Me: uhhh why is it cute?
Girl: well you just never see people reading books anymore!!
And that went on for a little while with her being completely amazed that I would read a book on my lunch break. I don't even know what more to say about it, it's just something I wanted to share because it blew my mind. What do you think? Sad huh.

ooooooh... that makes me so sad! Really???? No one reads books? There are more of us than that :(
ReplyDeletei do read books and and can't imagine life without them. <3
ReplyDeletesome people are just jerks.
That is so sad! How could that be? Maybe it's just that people don't seem to do so in public anymore. I hope that's it. Otherwise it wouldn't be good for my business:P
ReplyDeleteWe should start a public book reading revolution!
ReplyDeleteso sad! it makes me think of farenheit 451.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I think she may have meant that SHE doesn't read books anymore. I don't know why people take pride in saying things like "I haven't read a novel since high school!" Their loss, I guess.
ReplyDeleteReading is a joy!
My Fiance, My Dogs, My Books.... the three greatest joys in my life!
ReplyDeleteNothing makes me happier than a nice sunny nook, with a cup of tea and a good book!
Hahahaha, funny conversation! Love the pictures (:
ReplyDeleteha oh that is very sad! don't worry there are still people who read books on their lunch break... me included!
ReplyDeleteHaha, that snippet made me laugh! I guess people just don't read books in public anymore
ReplyDeletethat must have been her. I see lots of people reading books. just last night, a bit after midnight, I saw a couple on their way home from a party or bar, both reading on the subway, and I thought that was too cute. Saturday night, on the tube in London, and people are still reading! can't be that bad :o)
ReplyDeletePerhaps she was 13 and still enjoys picture books?
ReplyDeleteRachel thought this was funny. She loves reading also!
That's crazy! I see people reading books all the time - mostly on public transport. That girl sounds totally silly!!
ReplyDeletehaha what a bimbo. I actually brought my book to work today so I could read on ym lunch break.
ReplyDeleteAlso reading was on my list of what I wanted in a guy. I love people who read!!!
Wow! I couldn't imagine a world without books. They are so precious. We need more book lovers in the world.
ReplyDeleteSophie x
Hahaha that's hilarious.
ReplyDeleteI'm not one of those people who carry around books with them, probably because it makes me feel sick to read on the bus, but I can believe that there are people who read books. I mean, what are all those book stores for?
That is crazy! I can't believe she would find that odd!

I just don't understand how people don't read books. I'm mad about books. I take one with me when I go out clubbing, even. If my bag can't fit a book, the bag isn't going with me. I get upset when I don't have books!
ReplyDeleteMy mind is possibly broken.
that's so dissappointing. i am reading the keith richards biograohy at the moment and it is utterly fascinating.
ReplyDeletethat is extremely sad. i never leave the house without at least one book. it's like my never fail fashion accessory.
ReplyDeletesad really knowing that technology really rules the world.but i still enjoy my personal time at bookstore, bookstore is more like the happiest place on earth
ReplyDeleteI know many people who read books, and some who don't.
ReplyDeleteTheir loss :)
sounds pretty devastating
ReplyDeleteI read every night in bed and on most lunch breaks. The breaks I don't read on are because I forgot my book
ReplyDeleteThat was THE funniest!!! Oh I love people that haven't got a clue :P
ReplyDeletethat's so strange/funny!
ReplyDeleteI was reading a book on my lunch break (something I've enjoyed getting into the habit of), and I do notice how no one else around me does that, and I wondered if it made me look strange. It's totally different on public transport though.. it seems half the train is reading!
Wow, that's scary. Maybe she was thinking tat most people read e-books and not the real thing anymore. I hope that's part of what she was thinking.
ReplyDeleteWow. That IS really sad . . .. she is obviously very shallow minded or something.
ReplyDeleteOne of my new year resolutions is to read more like I used to. I'm just so busy these days, or rather be creating art, studying or something or other.
but I do love to read.
that's really sad, and a little bit dim of her! of course people read books! i think because i live in london and get the tube everyday most people have a book in their bag to keep them amused. however i am noticing a rise in electronic books. that makes me sad. x
ReplyDeleteI love to read books or anything I can get my hands on, it just feels so empty when I dont get to read. Its so sad that that is the way she sees it.
ReplyDeletewow. I don't know of many people who DON'T read books.
ReplyDeleteWow! That's totally ridiculous. I have to say, when I've read books on my lunch break at work in the past there was generally a divide with quite a few other people reading books and then others saying 'I don't know how you can sit there for an hour just reading, don't you get bored?'.
ReplyDeleteThat really is so sad
ReplyDeleteI feel this every time I see one of those stupid kindle things
One of the good things about books is the feel, the smell, the satisfactions of loosing yourself inside these pages of black and white
If its true that nobody reads anymore it really is a shame
that is so sad, that not as many people read books and especially printed books anymore :( Life would be so tasteless without the magic of words and imagination
ReplyDeleteWow, that's really sad... I guess I am fortunate, most people around me read on a daily basis... Though yeah, lately I've noticed more Iphones than books on subway rides. Sad sad.
ReplyDeleteMaybe he should have read more. Books are beautiful, and readers everywhere.
ReplyDeleteOne of my resolutions for 2011 is to read at least 24 books, so don't worry, we're still out there.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is pretty sad! I give books away at my store. After I am done reading them I put them on the front counter. You would be amaze how many people pick up the books and are amazed.....then i proceed to ask them if they want it? Then I tell them a little about the book and if they seem interested in it, I give it away and hope they read it. It is interesting the faces when they pick up and actual book.
