Whimsical & Vintage Inspired Hair Accessories

One of my favourite blogging buddies Connie from K is for Kani runs a super cute etsy store full of handmade headbands and other accessories, all designed and made by Kani herself. Make sure you check out her shop here

And I'd just like to draw your attention to my favourite item in store: the Amanda Deluxe Bow Hair Tie (as pictured above) named after yours truly! I love this little bow and it seems like the perfect item to have my name on, since it reminds me so much of my twitter background. Happy times! Thanks Kani :)

On another note, it's the weekend and I have a fun little project to take on for a magazine feature, can't wait to share more about it with you all soon!

Down at the River

(scrapbook peterpan blouse, american apparel skirt)

My lovely friend Rosie takes amazing pictures over at her tumblr Captured (make sure you go check it out!) and lately we've been hanging out more and more and recently snapped a few pictures after a coffee date. Rosie photographed New Zealand Fashion Week last year and will be doing so again this year and is quite a talent behind the lens! Make sure you go check out the rest of her work :)

Photoshop Help

I have only recently acquired Photoshop and am still very much a learner (I'm sure it's not just me who finds that there is so much to learn when it comes to PS) and while I'm still figuring it out I've been relying on the help of other talented photographers for curves, actions and tips. I've been getting a lot of questions about how I edit my photos but I really can't take credit for any of it, so I wanted to share where it all comes from:

Run by amazing photographer Nirrimi she sells actions and curves for relatively cheap and also occasionally shares a free one as well! I have quite a few but the one I probably use the most is "Rubies" which has been applied to the above photo.

The blog of photographer Laura Gommans from Amsterdam. She recently wrote this post with a photoshop tutorial on making a curves layer and it  has been one of the most helpful posts on this subject that I've read!

Carrie from Wish Wish Wish recently wrote a great post (HERE) with a free set of downloadable curves and some bokeh images for layering with other images to create a glittery, flared effect. Carrie also created an in-depth step by step tutorial on how she edits her pictures which you can see here.

19 year old fashion and music photographer Julia Trotti has Free Curve Friday which is pretty self explanatory and wonderful!

Hope that helps! If anyone else has any good links relating to this let me know :)

You Make Me Happy ♥

(credits: one, two, three, four)

Little things in my life that are making me smile lately:

unashamedly singing rap songs loud (and badly) with my husband no matter where we are or who we're with ♥ starting the day with a podcast while we try get out of bed (it's winter in New Zealand and freezing) ♥ finding the kittens top & tailing in one tiny basket to keep each other warm ♥ turning the radio in the car down during the music & up during the talking for the hilarious banter ♥ getting in bed super early then reading for hours ♥ organising all the files on my computer into dated & titled folders ♥ roast vege & cous cous salads ♥ thick socks ♥ mulled wine ♥ watching documentaries with friends ♥ when someone you admire starts to follow you on twitter ♥ taking packed lunches to work ♥ doing the groceries under budget ♥ dreaming of owning a house and planning what colours to paint it & how to decorate ♥ getting special treats in the post ♥ a strong cup of tea ♥ just being in the same room as someone you love

Red Door

On the weekend I spotted this pretty red door and managed to convince the husband it would be a good idea to snap a few pictures of me in front of it! Which involved sneaking around the back of a theatre and climbing up on some kind of loading platform! Things you do for a blog, haha :) And while we were there the water fountain came on so we awkwardly ran across muddy grass (not ideal in those shoes) to get a few pictures there too.

(Hunter Gatherer Turband, Somedays Lovin dress c/o Market HQ, Glassons shoes, Mink Pink denim jacket)

There was quite a breeze going so not getting a blast of wetness across my back was an art form but I managed it! What started off as a quick pitt stop to take a picture or two ended up with Jeremy and I in fits of laughter as we dodged mud and water and ran around like crazy people in the middle of town with a lot of cars driving past. I'm grateful to have a husband who will bear with me and my crazy requests!

Peanut Butter Cupcakes

Ingredients: 55g soft butter, 1 cup soft light brown sugar, 1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter, 2 lightly beaten eggs, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 cup plain flour, 2 tsp baking powder, 1/3 cup milk. For frosting: 2/3 cup cream cheese, 1/8 cup soft butter, 1 cup icing sugar.

For my "learning to bake" journey this year I kinda threw myself in the deep end and started off with learning to make Macarons and Red Velvet Whoopie Pies and skipped the baby steps like cookies and cupcakes. So would you believe, at age 24, these Peanut Butter Cupcakes are the FIRST cupcakes I have ever baked in my entire life! Crazy. They turned out pretty good though (thanks to the help of a patient teacher) and the recipe is below.

♥ Preheat oven to 180°
♥ Place butter, sugar & peanut butter in a bowl & beat until well mixed. Gradually beat in the eggs & vanilla extract. Sift in the flour & baking powder then fold them into the mixture, alternating with the milk. Spoon mixture into baking tray.
♥ Bake in oven for 25 minutes or until well risen & springy to touch
♥ For frosting beat butter & cream cheese together until smooth, sift in the icing sugar & beat together until well mixed
♥ Spread frosting onto cooled cupcakes and you're done!

*I truly had no idea cupcakes would be so easy to make. I'm honestly such a learner when it comes to baking!!

On another note, my amazing friend who has been teaching me most of what I know, has just started her own baking business! Check it out on facebook: From Me To You

Kirbee Lawler Wooden Brooches

Sydney based graphic designer and illustrator Kirbee Lawler makes the most lovely wooden brooches. Each item is lazer cut and etched from wood then pieced together by hand. I've been eying up the ship one for myself but they're both lovely! Oh to have that kind of talent.

Chictopia Loving

(Bianca Berry flop hat c/o Market HQ, Mink Pink shift dress c/o Market HQ, shoes & knit top - Glassons)

I've had a Chictopia account for a little while now but never really used it much but I thought I'd finally give it a proper go and it's fun! If you have an account make sure you add me! My Chicblog is HERE. To be honest I'm still kind of figuring it out and don't know how to use all the functions but I'm getting there! And a side note, after looking at these pictures I've decided I'm going to go back and get a little more taken off my hair so it'll sit just below my shoulders. Such a change to be excited about cutting my hair after years of being determined to grow it!

Sunday 11/12 Summer Campaign

Sunday is a New Zealand label run by lovely Wellington lady Miriam White. I had the opportunity to spend some time at the Sunday studio last year and it was great to get a behind the scenes peek at the creative process.

The above pictures are from the lookbook for our approaching Australasian summer, taken by another New Zealand talent Claire Mossong. You can check out the rest of the snaps on their facebook page as well as get a glimpse at previous collections. So pretty!

Brighten me Up

Right now we're in the middle of a pretty cold winter here in New Zealand and normally at this time of year my wardrobe is full of all things black to match the gloomy weather. But this year I've ended up wearing more colour than ever before and it's made winter not seem so bad somehow.

One thing I'm loving especially is brightly coloured nails. I got them done at a salon in bright blue recently, and then when that started to chip, Sone came over for a cup of tea and kindly shared her bright yellow OPI with me. So pretty. Now to decide what colour to wear next, I'm thinking sea foam green. What nail polish colours are you enjoying at the moment?

Down Time

Happy weekend my friends! I'm excited because I'll be having some much needed down time with my husband. After a very busy week it feels like we've hardly seen each other but tonight we're going to enjoy a cozy night in with some good food and a dvd or two. It's been far too long since we've spent a Saturday night at home and I couldn't be happier about it!

Hope you all have a great weekend too. Make sure you check out my giveaway as well, you could win an amazing prize pack from New Zealand boutique The Yellow Brick Road. All the details on what you could win and how to enter are HERE.
